The blue steel barrel mouth mouthpiece allows the sides of the bit move independently. The blue steel is a heat treated sweet iron, which has a sweeter taste and feels warmer for the horse than stainless steel. 

Blue steel will oxidize over time and change color to brown. This natural and completely harmless for the horse. 

The rings are stainless steel. Nickel free.
